Question for the mommas

We have decided that it is time for Daxton to get tubes in his ears. He has had multiple ear infection and constantly has fluid behind his ears. So the little man is having surgery. I know that it is very minor and that he should be done in 15 minutes. I am not too worried about it besides the fact he will have discomfort.

While he is getting tubes in his ears we are having him circumcised which turns out is a more intense procedure than the tubes. He will have to be completely put under and it will take longer than the tubes. I am sad to put him through this but at the same time feel like it is something that will help him in the long run. I know that uncircumcised males have a higher chance of infection and that worries me because of his transplant.
So my question is if anyone has any more useful information. As of now we are a go I have tried to call the transplant team to see what their opinion is from a cardiac stand point. I have not heard from them yet(very frustrated with the new mode of trying to get a hold of them, but that is another subject) What do you think?

We met with a urologist when Jack was about 9 months old but he really talked us out of doing because as you said, it is a little bit bigger deal than just a quick snip. Part of me wishes we would have gone ahead and done it though. Brynn Homer had Gator done when he was a little bigger and she said it wasn't that big of a deal. Maybe shoot her an email for advice.

Cardiology encouraged us to have that taken care of with Jacob. They specifically mentioned doing it because it decreased the infection risk and endocarditis. Because he was on aspirin he had extra bleeding after the procedure but it did not end up being a problem. We are so glad we had it taken care of when we did (I think he was two months old). I do know that like Aimee mentioned Gator had his tubes and Circ at the same time. Good luck!

I know someone who's little boy is healhty and became very ill with kidney infections. Because if these his family had to get him circumcised. I say go for it. Given the fact that these rejection meds are hard on the kidneys anyhow. I think that he will do well with his recovery and I know that you will take good care of him. Good Luck to you both.

I'm a heart mama of a 21 month old boy with Shone's Complex. We don't have a blog, but I love reading other heart baby blogs. My son was just circumcized last month when he was having tubes in his ears and another different urological procedure. It was pretty painful for him and it took almost 2 weeks for all the swelling to go away. I wish we could have done it sooner, but he was just too unstable when he was younger. I think if it's something you want for him, it's definitely a better idea to get it done when he is still little. 20 months old was very hard. My son actually started saying owie for the first time when we were changing his diaper. I was excited for a new word, but I wish it didn't have to happen that way.

Hey Hillary,
I am not sure from his health and heart but neither of my boys are circumsized. Noah is almost 7 and never had any problems. Alijah when he was 3 months had a urinary infection they talked to us about doing it and we thought we would if it continued to be a problem but he has been fine ever since. Although now anytime he is sick with fevers they always check his urine to rule it out. I know that as my boys get older it will just pull back and Alijah goes back pretty easy from when they pulled it back when he was sick. I am not really for circumsizing its more a culture things for my husbands family. I don't know if it is best because of his heart and meds or if its ok to leave it alone

We had Grant circumcised during one of his many surgeries and I was glad we were able to do it under full anesthesia. He was pretty little so your experience with Daxton will be different for sure. Cardiology was fine with it...they had no concerns. My only sad thing was that he kept crashing from other complications and had to have a foley catheter in for the nest few weeks. OUCH! Man, was I glad he was inpatient and could have all the pain meds he needed!! Good luck with the decision!
